We are pleased to advise that all surplus funds raised from the Staples Rodway Challenge this year will be donated to “Out and About with Kids in Hawkes Bay” and in particular will be directed towards the “Our Babies Hawkes Bay” campaign which Gabby, who runs Out and About in Hawkes Bay, is working on with members of the community to distribute to Maternity Services at the Hawkes Bay District Health Board.
Gabby, along with Yarn HB Knitters and Out and About supporters, are making up packs that include a merino wrap, merino or cotton jumpsuits along with hand knitted woollen garments and these will be given out by midwives/DHB to all babies born into hardship in Hawkes Bay.
These packs will keep the babies warm (when potentially they have no woollen garments in the family home) and will have a positive impact on those mothers who are struggling, which in turn helps at a grass roots level across all services that help the health and wellbeing of our precious babies, who do not choose poverty or deprivation. This "Our Babies" project aims to have a positive impact on families across the region showing that as a community we do care.
It is estimated by the DHB that 60% of babies in Hawkes Bay are born into hardship and vulnerable situations. With approximately 2,000 babies a year born here, that means about 100 babies a month go home without the essentials to keep them warm.
The surplus funds raised from the Challenge will go a long way towards making up the 1,200 packs that are needed.
Over the past nine years we have donated $116,000 to our designated charities. We have also made donations in excess of $55,000 to local schools and orienteering clubs to recognise their contributions in the areas of marshalling and timekeeping at the events and to the wildlife sanctuary to support their ongoing maintenance programme
